Alpha - Who Is Jesus?

Have you ever asked yourself this question? Perhaps you’ve wondered if He even existed or if He really said what He said? Alpha is all about asking and answering some of life’s toughest questions. This is done in a safe space, where everyone’s opinion is heard and valued. No question is too big or too small.

Jesus is the central figure in Christianity but even beyond that He is the foundation on which the world was created. That is, of course, if you believe what is said about Him. That’s the issue though, what is said about Him and what He said about Himself leaves us in a tricky position. We’re left with two choices, either He is really important or we should avoid Him altogether. So, which one is it?

Come along and explore this question together with us!

Alpha - Why did Jesus die?

Nobody voluntarily dies one of the most brutal kinds of death for no good reason. So, what is that reason?

In this session of Alpha, we will explore that question. Did He die because He was some crazy radical? Were His ideas dangerous? Did He die for a political or social cause? Was it worth it? Answering this very important ‘Why?’ question will help us figure out these other questions.

We invite you to journey with us, in an environment that is safe and accepting. See you there!

Alpha - How can I have faith?

Can we have faith in someone we don’t see? What basis do we have for faith?

Scripture is more than a history book or a book of “do’s” and “don’ts”. And, it’s more than a sacred religious text. In it we find God, living and active. We find a person. We find a relationship.

Faith is not a blind leap but trust based on good evidence. Come, test this out with others who wouldn’t necessarily call themselves Christian. All kinds of people and worldviews are welcome and the space is totally safe!

Alpha - Why and how do I pray?

Christians through the centuries have told stories of how their prayers to God made a difference in one or another situation. They spoke of direct line to the Creator God of the universe, an anytime and anywhere kind of connection that is founded on that relationship you would have heard about last week. So, how does this work?

This week, we’ll explore what the Bible has to say about prayer, why and how we do it. We’ll also think about the way in which a loving God loves to listen to our prayers and even helps us pray when we don’t know what to say. You don’t want to miss this!

See you there!

Quiet Morning

In our urban world, everything is loud and moves fast. We need times to slow down and find quiet.

A quiet morning is a time to draw away from the busyness of our lives to be still and hear God talking to us. This time will be directed by Brian Germond interspersed with times of reflection.

Our prayer is that you will find peace and healing through this spiritual experience.

Admission to Communion

Admission to Communion

This is a really special time when we welcome children to share in the Lord’s Supper. Young and old, we all have a share in Jesus; He is the one who always drew children to Himself (Mark 10:13-16) and so we invite them to take part in one of the most intimate traditions that Christians hold.

Our youth pastor, Nycholas, will be doing a 1 hour session that covers all the necessary material. Admission to Communion will be done at the next service that the child would usually attend. So, if the family attends the 09:30 service, the child will be admitted at the next 09:30 service.

Please, contact Nycholas on youth@stmartins.co.za if you’d like to register your child.

Please, join us in this act of worship to God!

The giving of tithes and offerings is a spiritual exercise that glorifies God, sustains the Church, and advances social justice and missions.

We encourage you to review your DG contributions to ensure you are giving according to your pledged gift. It has happened in the past that parishioners have just forgotten or their stop orders have ceased. This is totally understandable, hence, the reminder.

The DG will run over all Sunday services: 07:30, 09:30, 17:30, & Evensong at 18:00.

Difficult Issues in the Bible 4 - Suffering

How can a good God allow evil in this world? Answering this question is key for every person who ever lived or will live. Simply because everyone of us has either experienced evil acutely or seen happen from a distance. The question leaves us with a sort of conundrum - Is God good but unable to stop the evil, in which case He is not all-powerful, or is He able to prevent evil but won’t, which calls into question His goodness.

Please, make every effort to be with us as we face this dilemma head-on, in the hopes that we will develop a satisfactory answer that vindicates both His omnipotence and His goodness.

Difficult Issues in the Bible 3 - Patriarchy

As we seek to reach our culture with the Gospel effectively, we must aim to keep up with current conversation on, among other things, gender roles in our society. Much of the Bible was written in a patriarchal society where women were of less value than men. That can no longer be our worldview. So, one of the questions that presents itself to us is, “What is the timeless teaching of Scripture in this area?”

We look forward to having you with us on Sunday at our Get Real service for this critical conversation!

Difficult Issues in the Bible 2 - Sexuality

The Bible is an ancient text and our society has progressed a long way since it was compiled. So, how do we interpret the Bible’s teachings on sexuality so that we are both pure in God’s sight and relevant amidst our current culture? For this topic we hope to touch sexuality generally but also specifically, healthy expressions of sex, homosexuality, etc.

This will be an important message for our day and age, you won’t want to miss it! Come along to our Get Real service on Sunday evening to be challenged but also encouraged.
