Social Outreach

In the Gospel, Jesus gives us a new commandment to love one another as the basis of all that we proclaim and do as the beloved community of God.  Jesus says to his disciples, “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another.  Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.  By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” The disciples would not be known by the sign of the fish, nor even the cross, but by their love for one another just as Jesus loved them. (Earl Neil’s sermon 6 May 07)

Social Outreach is the means by which St Martin's expresses the love that Jesus calls us all to. By what we do we show our love, live and spread the Gospel and draw others to Christ.

Soup Kitchen
The Soup Kitchen aims to provide a nutritious meal and a food parcel every Thursday morning, except during the December holidays. Each recipient gets a cup of soup and a few slices of fresh bread followed by a hot nutritional meal of meat, vegetables and rice. In addition, each person is then given a take away parcel containing mostly bread, at least one fruit, a few vegetables and a tin of canned food such as beans or fish, when available. The parcel is usually sufficient to sustain one person for two or three days. On average, 150 people are served every Thursday, of which about 75% are men, the numbers fluctuate a lot rising to 190 on some days and dropping to 120 on others.

There is currently a team of about 15 regular helpers and there is a strong feeling of sharing and fellowship amongst this group of people.
